Positive Behaviour Support

Behaviour Support Planning

We are an approved provider for participants requiring Positive Behavior Support Services under Capacity Building Supports (CBS). At ADC we provide a wide range of services and supports to satisfy the needs of our participants so that their quality of life and those around them are improved. Everyone has the right to communicate their needs, participate in activities that are meaningful to them, and retain choice and control in their life. Capacity Building Supports (CBS) focuses on building our participant’s skills to improve independence and achieve their long-term goals rather than using restrictive practices such as limiting the person’s movement or activities. Hence Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is classed under CBS for the goal to form and improve Relationships. PBS aims to help our participants develop positive interactions and behaviour for their wellbeing and their relationships.

What is Positive Behavior Support

Individuals respond to their environment or communicate their needs differently and for some of our participants, they do this by using behaviours that challenge. Challenging behaviours can cause broken relationships, frustration and people will try to use reactive practices to stop behaviours. Positive behaviour support (PBS) is the best way to support an individual who has challenging behaviours. Positive support for behaviour is an informed, comprehensive approach that caregivers and family can utilise to teach and encourage people to act appropriately.

What is Positive Behavior Support

All behaviour, including challenging behaviour, happens for a reason – understanding what the function of the behaviour is can suggest how to make sure the person has access to the things they need. This may involve changing the environment, teaching them new skills etc. PBS uses the principles and procedures from behavior analysis to assess and support skills teaching and behavior change. Other, complementary evidence-based approaches may be included in PBS plans such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Parent training for children with CB and early intervention for children 3-5 with emerging challenging behaviors.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is an effective intervention service that tackles a wide range of issues, such as:

  1. Boarder line personality disorder.
  2. Autism.
  3. Intellectual disability.

What to expect?

After we receive a referral we will contact the participant’s primary support person/s and meet with our behaviour practitioner. PBS bases decisions on data gathered about a person’s skills, behaviour, and needs so participant and their primary support networks will get to know each other and complete a behaviour assessment. A behaviour practitioner will conduct a functional assessment which will help to identify the reasons (function) for a person’s behaviour and is used to create a clear and structured plan of action.

You will then receive a Support Plan for responding to challenging behaviour and reinforcing positive behaviour based on data gathered about a person’s skills, behaviour, and needs. A PBS plan will include proactive strategies to prevent challenging behaviour from happening, strategies to teach new skills to make the challenging behaviour less likely and reactive strategies that minimise restriction if it does occur.

Your behavior practitioner will work closely with you to get the support and training you need to successfully implement your plan.
After your PBS Plan has been implemented we will need to ensure we document valuable progress feedback. It is important to note that PBS is not a quick fix, however, the aim is to actively support people over the long term and to monitor and maintain their quality of life.
